Arista Place is an 11-tower, resort-inspired community in Sto. Niño, Parañaque City located near the airport, beside the river. From the very start of the project, DMCI Homes made sure to get it right by applying principles of landscape architecture to help heal the ecosystem fronting the property. Landscape Manager Alexis Valiente explains, “Yes, the goal is to beautify but also to make a statement that we’re doing sustainable ecological designs.”
Once the main source of economic sustenance among dwellers along the riverbanks, Parañaque River (where waters from Manila, Makati and Pasay converge to flow into Manila Bay) has bore the brunt of industrialization and urbanization, and now needs to be revitalized. Instead of turning a blind eye or walking away from the challenge, DMCI Homes followed the lead of the current government and efforts from a decade ago to rehabilitate Pasig River by deciding to help improve the area so that the barangay can maintain its strategic advantage and family-friendly environs.
Arista Place is DMCI Homes’ first development that will receive extensive landscape architectural designs to help breathe vitality into the vicinity. Unlike other developers, it will create the landscape in conjunction with the construction of the condominium community, rather than relegating landscaping to a cosmetic finish.
Valiente makes it clear though that landscaping as a way to fix up water quality is not the 100% solution to the river situation. But through phytoremediation, a form of ecological intervention that uses plants to help clean up polluted environments, it becomes an effective and natural method to help the ecosystem recuperate. One of the most prolific of the plants used for this purpose is Vetiver grass which can suck up contaminants including metals that pollute the river, usually utilized in mining sites. With the grasses’ long roots going as deep as 2 meters that intertwine and form a mesh underground, it is an effective erosion-prevention technique to stabilize the soil along riverbank slopes.
There is a lot of logic and science behind the plant palette for Arista Place. “We layer plants with varying uses that complement in form.” Valiente’s team is placing Neem trees that grow wide and which are known to have mosquito-repellant properties. The riverfront will also be lined with tall and fragrant Champaca trees, anti-mosquito and perfumy Citronella, and big Acacias. Hundreds of trees will make their home in Arista Place, forming two to three layers of tree groves that, in about 2 years, will provide canopy-style covering on the riverfront. As the plant assemblage gets nearer the residential towers, more classic landscaping plants will be used.
For DMCI Homes that is proud primarily of its engineering background and feats, landscaping in Arista Place is being done simultaneously with the engineering process. “Management wanted to do it at the same time as construction so that early on, before the community is established, we’d have the buffer zone already in place,” he says. Even now as construction is being set up, the landscape architecture team of DMCI Homes has already moved in to begin 100 meters of test area. “We’re putting this way ahead of schedule, even before building the amenities. This is to show our clients that even at the early stages, we’re already trying to beautify and create sustainable solutions.”
Arista Place features modern tropical architecture with DMCI Homes’ biggest allotment for amenities at 1.2 hectares. It has the largest multi-integrated play system with play equipment based on age demographics and which can accommodate all ages. “People don’t cease to play once they reach their 20’s that’s why we have placed outdoor exercise stations. The last station is an open field for doing Tai Chiamong others. Although the term play is often associated with children. It doesn’t really stop at a certain age, its activity that evolves with the age of the person. We’re taking advantage of the sprawling amenities space to do all that.”
At the heart of all these undertakings is the commitment to provide an enhanced quality of life for Filipino families. Valiente points out that relative to the entire stretch of Parañaque River, “Arista Place is very small but it is now part of the solution.” DMCI Homes is perhaps one of the best entities to lead innovations in this area: the Consunji group’s conglomerate of expertise in nation-building industries guarantees a wealth of top-rate information and technology that can be readily accessed and exchanged within the business units. This is an assurance that DMCI Homes, with a vision to offer middle-income families with exceptional living solutions, can “really deliver on what we promise.”###
